Chapter 11

To Jess’s delight, Natalie was as passionate in bed as she’d hoped. After her recovery, Natalie had pinned Jess down and kissed her dizzy, before pleasuring her again and again. They had dashed to the kitchen after that, rummaging around in the freezer for something easy to make, before bringing the dinner into the living room and watching another movie.

This time, though, they had snuggled together on the couch after eating, wrapping themselves in a big, soft blanket. When they had gone to bed, sleep eluded them. Instead, they made love slowly in Jess’s bed, taking their time exploring one another’s bodies and then finally falling asleep entwined together.

Now that it was Sunday morning, Jess was ready to show off her breakfast-making skills. It wasn’t often she got a chance to cook for someone else and she was excited about the prospect of showing off just a little. Since Natalie had volunteered to go out and feed the chickens, Jess gathered everything she needed to make pancakes. It was the first time she’d had the house to herself with a…

Jess hesitated, her whisk poised over the mixing bowl full of ingredients.

What was Natalie to her, now? She certainly not just a farmhand or employee. That was a line Jess decided was beyond blurred and this was fine as far as she was concerned. She felt very comfortable claiming Natalie as her girlfriend, but how would Nat feel about it? It seemed like another discussion they had to have. The sooner, the better.

As she stirred the batter and poured the mix on the heated griddle, she decided not to worry about it for the time being. Worrying about labels just wasn’t how she went about her life. If things were right – and she was pretty sure they were – it wouldn’t matter what she called Natalie. Everything would fall into place.

“Hey there.” Natalie walked through the back door and stretched her arms overhead. Peeking over her shoulder, Jess watched her movements. Natalie was certainly softer and curvier than Jess, but there was, as far as Jess was concerned, far more grace in how she moved. Maybe it was because Jess approached everything on the farm head-on, while Natalie had learned to maneuver carefully around people and places in her life. Whatever it was, Jess loved watching the way Natalie walked or gestured, or even sat down at the breakfast table.

“Good morning to you.” As she slid the spatula under the pancakes to flip them, Jess said, “I hope you’ve got a big appetite this morning, because I made enough to feed us for a week.”

“I have a ridiculous appetite when there are pancakes involved.”

“Good.” Jess divided them up onto two plates and garnished them with whipped cream, strawberries, and slices of kiwi.

When she set the plates on the table, Natalie’s eyes went wide. “Oh, how did you find my weakness?”

“Sweet stuff or pancakes and fruit?” Jess shrugged. “I didn’t, but I thought it would be fun after all of Kate’s healthy cooking to go with something light and sweet.
